Those Brown Spots Don't Have to Stay
Sun spots, medically known as solar lentigines, develop from years of ultraviolet exposure. Sunlight stimulates melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing melanin, and repeated exposure can cause localized areas of excess pigmentation.
IPL, or Intense Pulsed Light, is one of my favorite treatments for sun damage. It delivers controlled pulses of broad spectrum light that are absorbed by melanin in the skin. The energy is converted to heat, targeting unwanted pigment, which gradually darkens and sheds as the skin renews itself.
Many of our returning patients already know how satisfying it can be to watch those spots fade. For those new to IPL, the treatment can provide noticeable improvement in skin tone without surgery or significant downtime, although some patients benefit from multiple treatments.
IPL Isn't Just for Brown Spots
IPL is also one of my favorite treatments for rosacea, particularly persistent facial redness and visible blood vessels. The light energy is absorbed by hemoglobin within superficial blood vessels, helping reduce their visibility and improve the overall complexion. Although there is no cure for rosacea, IPL can be an excellent way to manage its visible vascular symptoms.
I also have a personal appreciation for IPL because I have melasma myself. I've been treating melasma with IPL for approximately 20 years, and I've learned how important it is to individualize treatment based on pigmentation, Fitzpatrick skin type, and response to light and heat. Melasma requires a different approach from ordinary sun damage, but carefully selected patients can benefit from IPL as part of a broader treatment plan.
Whether we're treating sun spots, rosacea, or melasma, my goal is always the same: understand your skin and choose the treatment that makes the most sense for you.
