Introducing Intense Pulsed Light

An Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment is an effective way to even out body skin complexion that has suffered from the direct rays of the sun, and has left areas of uneven pigment with large, pigmented patches, that we call "sunspots", "age spots" or "liver spots."

Renove Medical Spa has the most effective IPL system on the market, the American made Sciton system, to deliver the most effective yet gentle IPL for our patients. Sciton has trademarked their intense pulsed system as "broad band light", or BBL. With the Sciton BBL system, treatments are fast, easy and pigment is lifted gently and gradually over the course of the next 1-2 weeks. The Sciton system can reach deeper pigment better than any other IPL system currently available.

How Does IPL Work

The Sciton BBL utilizes light in the visible spectrum and is not a laser. Depending on the skin condition, different colors of light may be used to better target each individual skin concern. For example, the Sciton BBL can harness blue light to treat acne, cyan light to lift pigment, green light to target blood vessels on the face such as rosacea, orange light for hair removal, and red light for skin tightening!

To target pigment, we will apply a cooling gel to the area to be treated, to ensure the Sciton BBL light penetrates the skin and for comfort. Then the Sciton BBL handpiece is applied directly to the skin to deliver quick flashes of light. The melanin in the abnormally pigmented skin will absorb the delivered light energy, which forces that pigment to expand and be released from the deeper skin layers. This then allows the unwanted pigment to be naturally exfoliated and removed from the skin, leaving normal colored skin behind. Typical exfoliation time is one to two weeks, as pigment comes to the surface and flakes off gradually.

Who Can Be Treated with Intense Pulsed Light?

Since IPL targets pigment, whether normal or abnormal, IPL works best when there is a difference in color between normal and abnormal skin. Therefore, IPL works better on lighter skin that has darker unwanted pigment. It is very difficult to utilize IPL for darker skin tones safely, though Dr. Parsons is the only physician in the area who has the experience, knowledge and equipment to target unwanted pigment for those with darker skin tones safely. Dr. Parsons often treats those with a Mediterranean, Hispanic, Middle Eastern, Asian, Native American or on rare occasion African skin tones.

Can Other Body Areas Be Treated with IPL?

The decollete or chest is another area that often shows signs of sun damage and can exaggerate your age. Intense pulsed light works very well for correcting the damage in this area, though more than one treatment is often needed due to the more extensive pigmentation most women have here. Though once corrected, treating the chest is very rejuvenating! Hands, arms and legs can also be treated.

What Can I Expect During an IPL Treatment?

Dr. Parsons’ photofacial treatment uses full spectrum natural light, not a laser or other harmful rays, that is applied to the skin being treated in a series of about 30 pulses. Immediately following the treatment you will feel a sensation similar to a sunburn, which will last 45 minutes to as long as 2 hours. Afterward, your skin will feel normal and you can even apply makeup. Over the next 12 to 24 hours the unwanted pigment, which has absorbed the natural light energy, will darken and begin to work its way to the surface of the skin where is can finally be naturally exfoliated over the next three to seven days. Unlike deep laser resurfacing techniques or chemical peels, there is no downtime, no damage to the overlying skin, without the need to avoid going out in public or dealing with messy dressings.

Pros

  • Little to no downtime

  • Relatively long-lasting improvements in skin quality and texture can be achieved

  • Can be performed anywhere on the body

Cons

  • Several treatments may be required before full effects are seen

  • Not as effective for tanned or darker skin

  • Must stay out of the sun after each treatment

These are the top three pros and cons to weigh when considering IPL  Photorejuvenation. If you want to focus on what is unique to you, please consult with your aesthetic plastic surgeon.

When Should I get an IPL Treatment to Remove Unwanted Pigment?

The month of October has traditionally been a popular time for our intense pulsed light treatments, as most sun damage occurs during the summer months, and most people have been more or less out of direct sun for the month of September. But IPL treatments can be done anytime year-round, as long as the skin is not too tanned or burned.

In honor of our patients who have opted to decrease their sun worshipping activities this fall, we at Renove Medical Spa have chosen to offer some of our best specials on IPL treatments during the month of October, to encourage continued self-care and promote healthy skin. Your skin will thank you! ALL IPL treatments, of ANY face or body area, will be discounted 30% during the month of October.

AND when you book a Body IPL treatment, we will ALSO give you one of our Renove private label body skin care treatment products, to speed up your results. You can choose between our glycolic 15% vitamin fortified Body Lotion, body exfoliating Cleanser, or retinol anti-cellulite tightening Body Lotion (while supplies last).

"Yesterday I had an IPL treatment for the first time and was delighted to have the attention and care rendered by all! I was provided with thorough explanations about what to expect prior, during, and after this treatment. My questions were easily and quickly answered. I felt complete confidence that I was receiving the utmost in client service and genuine concern that I feel satisfied with the results. I will return for other needs and happily offer my highest recommendation!!

"Loved my IPL results! One treatment and my age and dark spots are gone!!"

In just 10 days my sunspots were almost gone. After two weeks there was only red shading of the area treated and that started fading too. I would definitely have this done again. Thanks!

~ Theresa P.

Like best: I absolutely loved Dr.Parsons. She made me feel so welcomed and comfortable at all my appointments. I am so amazed and happy with my results of my IPL treatments for Rosacea. Very friendly staff and super helpful with any questions I had. Definitely recommend!
